Wanna buy a skull?
Well, if you want to purchase a skull, you have some decent selection on this website. Of course, meaning skull designs here. But are there people, who want to own actual human remains? Apparently yes. And it is even not so difficult to get one. The human skull trade has actually a long history, but in today’s times it is the first time it’s literally opened to public. And the volume of skull trade grows rapidly. According to this article, the sales has risen from $5200 in 2013 to $57000 in 2016, while this “official” number is only a fraction of the total trade volume (however, including not exclusively skulls).
For what reason these people are buying and selling human skulls, instead of just wearing skull T-shirts? It’s a hobby like any other. In particular, aesthetically modified skulls (e.g. with carved tribal ornaments) are desirable. You can purchase genuine tribal skull, or a “replica” – this means ordinary skull, later engraved to look like a tribal one. Although this business may be viewed at least as morally controversial by someone, the skull traders seem to be normal nice people. Just having some human skulls in their living rooms.
While several years ago, the center of the skull trade was e-bay, today it is Instagram. People are posting artifact photos and if you like it, you can contact the seller and purchase a skull that matches your personality. For more, see this article on WIRED.
